Virginia Apprenticeship Alumni Association (VAAA)
Business Meeting Minutes
August 26, 2015
The VAAA met via conference call on August 26th 2015 at 3:00 pm. Present at the meeting were Gary Duff, Norris Williams, Ray Davenport, Tim Gardner, Brad Beasley, and Ray Louth.
Minutes from the February meeting were reviewed and approved.
Tim Gardner gave a treasurers report. The current VAAA balance is $18,082.21
Tim Gardner gave the scholarship committee report. We gave out 2 VAAA scholarships and 1 CTE scholarship for 2015. The scholarship selection committee as appointed by Norris Williams was Gary Duff, Darold Kemp, and Peter Mercier from New Horizons. Gary Duff reminded that the scholarship committee is to be appointed no later than December 2015 for the year 2016.
Gary Duff reported that the 2015 Golf Tournament will be held on September 24th at The Hollows Golf Club. He reminded everyone to get their registration forms in as early as possible. As usual help is needed for finding golfers, teams, hole sponsors, prizes, and help on tournament day.
Tim Gardner reported that we have 132 members for 2015 so far. Of those 75 are new graduates.
Gary Duff gave a subcommittee report. Gary, Tim Gardner, and Bev Donati met to discuss new ideas for VAAA to get involved in. The first is a clothing drive for Richmond Technical Center for their mock interview clothes closet. The announcement was sent out to the State Council and to the VAAA board. Clothes can be turned in at the state council meeting in September or at the golf tournament. The next item reported was the VAAA initiative to partner with Skills USA. Gary met with Deborah Tripp of Skills USA on August 19th. She presented two pages of sponsorship opportunities for the VAAA to get involved in. She also suggested that scholarships for CTE completers who are entering registered apprenticeship in the fall would be a great way for the VAAA to help. The nominees would have to be Skills USA members, CTE program completers, and entering a registered apprenticeship program in the fall. Ray Davenport suggested that the scholarship committee and the subcommittee meet in January each year to decide our funding goals and then submit the plan to the full board for approval.
Norris reported on the low cost of conference calls.
The meeting adjourned at 3:50 pm.
Respectfully
Gary A Duff, Secretary VAAA
